Bipolar and depression
April 2, 2008 Alcohol Abuse, Depression, Sobriety No CommentsBipolar disorder, also referred to as bipolar depression or manic depression, is a devastating disease. Bipolar victims are subject to stark and unpredictable mood swings, from withering lows on the one hand to terrifying highs on the other. To live with bipolar disorder is to be forever trapped between two emotional extremes, which makes it easy to understand why so many bipolar sufferers turn to drug and alcohol abuse as a means of self-medication. It also explains why successful drug and alcohol rehab must include thorough depression treatment where appropriate.
If you’re a bipolar addict, you can’t get sober without first achieving a meaningful level of psychological recovery. Addiction is a disease with both physical and emotional roots, after all, and addiction treatment must promote holistic healing. What that means, in plain terms, is that the treatment center that’s right for you is the one that uses advanced dual diagnosis techniques to address bipolar disorder, depression, and other psychological conditions. Anything less than that simply isn’t good enough.
