Working with addicts

6:07 pm Drug Abuse, Drug Addiction, Drug Rehabilitation

I work at a drug rehabilitation in Los Angeles. I am a counselor, I spend all day, and some nights with drug addicts who, as you may know, are not always the easiest people to be around. They live with their drug addiction every day, and in turn, so do I. Some days its really, really hard. At the specific drug rehab I work at, we get new people every month who are trying to get sober. For some of them, sobriety is a hard thing to attain. I see people breaking down, people trying to face their fears, people trying to deal with serious drug abuse issues. Just the other day I saw this young kid crying. I sat with him for hours, talking to him, listening to him, sharing what I know about drug addiction but nothing seemed to work. Then, he said the most amazing thing. He said he that there are a million places he’d rather be, but that deep down, in the same place that makes him a drug addict, he knows being there is the right thing. As soon as he said that I leaned back, and smiled. He asked me how could I be smiling? I told him, you know what, I feel the same way. There’s a million places I’d rather be, but right then and there I know that sitting with him, listening to him, was where I needed to be. Then, he smiled.
